“I painted this sunset view on a hike in the vicinity of Lake Baikal. It started as a small oil sketch executed on location: minimum detail, maximum expression. The motif was so captivating that I decided to scale the composition up while preserving the immediacy of the feeling. I wanted to render the scene holistically with a minimum number of strokes and accentuate the flamboyant warmth of the forest in the fading rays of sun.” —Yuriy Ushakov
Yuriy’s hometown of Irkutsk lies on the Angara River, the only river that outflows from Lake Baikal, while over 300 rivers flow into it forming picturesque bays along the lake’s coastline. However, this landscape well transcends a particular geographical location. Darker palette and symbolic appeal of a lone boat evoke the mystical tone of Goya’s paintings, including The Dog.
